Pre-Algebra & Algebra 1
Variables, equations, graphing, and the order of operations — the skills everything later depends on.
One-on-one · Grades 6–12
Patient, encouraging tutoring for middle and high school students in Des Moines. We rebuild the foundations, practice the tricky parts, and send students into test day feeling ready.
Subjects
Every session is built around your student's actual class, homework, and upcoming tests — not a generic workbook.
Variables, equations, graphing, and the order of operations — the skills everything later depends on.
Proofs, angles, triangles, area, and volume, with lots of sketching so the ideas stop feeling abstract.
Functions, quadratics, logarithms, and trig identities, paced to match your school's curriculum.
Timed practice, calculator strategy, and the question types that show up again and again on test day.
Stuck on tonight's assignment? Bring it in and we'll work through it together, step by step.
How to take notes, review for a test, and manage math anxiety so studying actually sticks.
How it works
No packages to buy up front and no long-term commitment. Start with one session and see how it goes.
Send a short note with your student's grade, class, and what feels hardest right now. I'll reply within a day with a few time options.
The first session is a friendly assessment. We find the gaps, set a goal, and agree on how often to meet.
Each week we build on the last. You'll get a brief note after every session on what we covered and what to review.
Rates
One flat rate, whether we meet at the library, online, or at your kitchen table. No registration fees and no minimum package.

Your tutor
I'm a former high school math teacher with 12 years in the classroom and a lifetime of loving the moment a student says "oh, I get it now." I started Northside Math Tutoring so I could give students the unhurried, individual attention that's hard to find in a full class.
My approach is calm and confidence-first. We move at your student's pace, celebrate small wins, and never make anyone feel behind for asking a question.
What parents ask
The honest answers, before you book.
It depends on the goal. For homework support, many families come weekly through the school year. For test prep, we usually plan six to ten sessions leading up to the test date. We'll talk it through after the first meeting and adjust as we go.
Both. In-person sessions are available at the Northside library or at your home within the Des Moines metro. Online sessions use a shared whiteboard, and many students find them just as productive.
That's exactly who this is for. We start where your student actually is, rebuild the missing pieces, and move forward from there. No judgment, and no pretending the gaps aren't there.
You pay per session, after it happens, by card or cash. Cancel or reschedule with at least 24 hours' notice and there's no charge. Later cancellations are billed at half rate.
Yes. I have classroom experience supporting students with IEPs and 504 plans and can align tutoring with the accommodations your student already uses at school.
